You once asked your husband if you could invite your friend Sara and her kids in the evening. You also asked him if you could have pizza for dinner that night as it is the kids’ favourite meal. He exploded in your face and said that you were self-centered and selfish. He said he does not want to waste his money over ordering pizza. He went on to say that he did not like your friend and started calling her bad names.

You remained silent and did not say a word. Another time you tried talking to your husband about wanting to work but he wouldn't let you apply for a job. He also did not give you any money. He always accused you of being very “needy” and always used to tell you that he needed his own space. You later found out that he was intimately involved with another woman and when you confronted him, he hit you in the face and left you bleeding. He threatened if you told anyone else, you will face severe consequences.

The worst was that he always made you feel that you were less Muslim than he was because you do not wear hijab. He also constantly used verses from the Quran taken out of context against you to defend his violence and the need to control you. You feel like Allah has left you alone and you don’t know why you are suffering like this. You need help to get a lawyer, and you are worried about custody issues, but you do not have any money.
