When my husband and I moved to Canada, we were so excited to start our lives together! In the beginning, everything was great, but things went downhill quickly. After purchasing our condo, my husband quickly started accumulating debt. He maxed out all his credit cards, took out credit cards in my name and put me in debt as well, completely ruining my credit.

When our financial situation escalated, the verbal abuse started. He would put me down and make me feel worthless. He went as far as stopping me from seeing my family and friends.

One day, he started bringing drugs into the home. At that time, I was pregnant. When I asked him about it, he became physically abusive. He hit me so hard that I suffered a miscarriage.

A few months later, I ended up getting pregnant again. That’s when I decided that enough was enough. Just as I was planning on leaving, he strangled me one night, leaving me no choice but to call the police.

I told my friend what happened and she connected me with Nisa Homes. Although the home was not up and running at the time, the volunteers at Nisa Homes helped me get income support, find my own apartment, connected me to a lawyer and helped me throughout the court process. They also encouraged me to apply for a teaching job which I successfully got Alhamdulillah and can now support my child and I.

Nisa Homes is my support system and continues to help me until today!
