“I am a survivor of a toxic and abusive marriage that I withstood for 20 years. When I finally left, I had to take my daughter and granddaughter with me. My daughter had gotten into a bad car accident leaving her almost entirely paralyzed. She required constant care and intense physiotherapy.

I had to be the backbone of my family because they were completely dependent on me. I worked long hours as a cook to meet our basic needs. However, my ex-husband found me and started to harass me. I didn’t feel safe, not only did he force me to leave my home, but now I had to move to another city so I could be away from his abuse.

I felt hopeless in a new place where I knew no one and had what felt like the weight of the world on my shoulders.

Upon arrival, I connected with Nisa Homes and my family was brought to the shelter. It felt like that weight was finally shifting, I had others who understood what I was going through, supported me and helped me make a plan. They also helped me find a personal support worker, put my grandchild in school and 3 months later, we successfully moved out from Nisa Homes to our own place!

Not only that, but Nisa Homes helped me secure a bursary to go to college Alhumdulillah! I’m halfway through my diploma and finally starting to see the light at the end of the tunnel!”
