“I arrived at Nisa Homes speaking very little English and with two toddlers.”

With the help of a nurse at my doctors office, I managed to leave my abusive husband. They took me to a shelter, but no one there was able to communicate with me due to my limited English. After weeks with little progress, I was finally referred to Nisa Homes, which turned my life around.

“After moving out from Nisa Homes into my own basement apartment, I am able to travel everywhere on my own, talk to my children’s teachers and do online banking by myself. I feel confident and proud of myself to have accomplished so much in such a short time and can’t wait to start looking into starting a career and going back to school inshaAllah!”

Coming to Nisa Homes was like coming to my second home. The caseworker immediately helped me feel at ease as she spoke my language, understood my culture, and what I needed to feel safe and at home. At this point, I couldn’t even take the bus, go out for groceries or to doctor’s appointments because I was terrified my husband would find me and take my kids away. Slowly, the volunteers and the caseworkers taught me how to communicate on the phone for appointments and how to use the transit app. They helped me enroll in an English conversation circle and sign my kids up for activities.
