Refugee: 3 of 3

Your financial situation is really weighing heavily on your mind, the welfare you receive is next to nothing since you’re a refugee and your daughter’s illness requires her to be on a consistent special diet. You are feeling really overwhelmed by the fact that you have almost nothing in your bank account.
You need urgent winter clothes for yourself and your daughter. You don’t even know how you will be able to give your child a hot meal. Your daughter is in elementary school and you are worried that all the changes in her life are going to make it hard for her in the coming months when you are alone.

Choose one of the following options:

Once you come to the home, your dedicated caseworker works with you to carefully look over your finances. If you are eligible then we will provide you with a monthly gift card allowance, in addition to what we provide within the home already (eg grocery items to cook meals, meat, clothing, hygiene products). If we feel you require ongoing financial support, we refer your case to National Zakat Foundation. If you meet their criteria, you may receive additional supports to alleviate some of your financial burden for a short time.

We can set you up to receive additional support from our team, including our Supportive Counsellors, remotely for up to 6 months after you have left the home. Your caseworker and remote caseworker will work with you to ensure that when you leave Nisa Homes, you have a Safety Plan in place to keep yourself and your daughter safe and how to escape in case you ever feel like you are in danger.
Unfortunately, this is not possible. We take the safety of everyone in the home very seriously and for this reason, all locations of our homes across Canada remain confidential. However, in a situation like this we would ask that you make alternative arrangements and meet at a mutual safe space e.g. A plaza or shopping mall or grocery store nearby.
Your caseworker and childcare worker will work together with you and your daughters’ school to ensure that the transition for her is as simple as possible and that the school is made aware of her learning support needs and of the safety needs of you and your daughter.

Nisa Homes can provide you with a safe, warm home and help you to make your own goals and find a solution so that you can have a place to call home.
