Women Like Us: International Women’s Day Virtual High Tea

Time: This event is for Sunday, March 7th, 4-6 PM EST • 1-3 PM PST • 2-4 PM MST

A global day celebrating the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women, International Women’s Day aims to create awareness around gender disparity. In honour of this day, Nisa Homes invites you to join us for a National Virtual High Tea, coming together to celebrate women in our Muslim communities as well as providing a safe platform for all Muslim women across the country to connect while enjoying their tea/ coffee and treats. 

Panelists for the event include: Nour Hachem, Halah Zumrawi, Noureen Tilly, Timiro Mohamed, Amira Elghawaby and Sally Dimachki. The event will be moderated by Imane Alt Daoud, Supportive Counsellor at Nisa Homes Edmonton.  

Our esteemed panelists will be discussing the female figures that have inspired them and influenced them in different ways and how this influence manifests in their actions and involvement in the community. They will also share their personal experiences and discuss what we can do individually as well as collectively to uplift other women. They will also talk about the different challenges and obstacles women in our community face — emotionally, socially, and economically) and how we can support each other navigating our way through them. HIGH TEA BOXES: All deliveries for GTA, Vancouver, Calgary, Ottawa and Edmonton of High Tea Boxes will be made on the day of the event. High Tea Boxes will be delivered the day before in Windsor.

PANELISTS:

Nour Hachem is the president and founder of Build a Dream. Through Build a Dream – the non-profit that she founded in 2014 — Nour utilizes her 13 years of experience as a workforce advisor, mentor, and influencer to inspire youth to make informed career choices that challenge the status quo. Nour has traveled across Canada speaking about workforce development and recruiting women for male-dominated industries. She also led a national research project with AIA Canada to develop a national strategy to help industry attract, recruit, retain, and advance women in the automotive industry. Nour has worked on programs for youth, newcomers, women on social assistance, internationally trained doctors, and has talked with hundreds of representatives from all levels of industry, education, and government. 

Halah Zumrawi is a student of clinical counseling with a keen interest in the psychosocial and spiritual aspects of addiction and recovery. In recent years, Halah’s work in her Muslim communities has focused on lowering barriers to culturally competent mental health care. Halah always makes time to read, cultivate her love of languages and be near the ocean.

Noureen Tilly is an Islamic scholar, Chaplain, speaker, and a certified life and health coach. At present, she is the Academic Director of the Noor Quran Islamic & Arabic Studies Academy founded by her in 2007, an instructor at the Women & Faith organization and a full-time chaplain at the University of Calgary. She is also multilingual and fluently speaks both French and English. She continues to serve various communities across Canada and has a keen interest in building community, inspiring positive change and empowering people of all ages. 

Timiro Mohamed is an award-winning Somali-Canadian spoken word poet based in Edmonton, Alberta. Her practice is rooted in responsible storytelling, centers Black Femmes, and celebrates her many identities. She is inspired by the women who came before her and passed down the modalities of storytelling that inform her work.

Amira Elghawaby is a journalist and human rights advocate. She currently works in Canada’s labour movement. Amira is a contributing columnist for the Toronto Star and Press Progress. She is also a founding board member of the Canadian Anti-Hate Network and a board member with the Silk Road Institute. 

Sally Dimachki is the Manager of the Investment Readiness Program at the Canadian Women’s Foundation where she supports the growth and readiness of women-serving organizations to join the social finance ecosystem, to build bridges across sectors and create stronger and more resilient communities. As a Syrian and French immigrant to Canada, Sally is also passionate about amplifying the voices of immigrant and refugee women in leadership. She was the Delegate of France at the 2012 G(irls)20 Summit and served as the Chair of the inaugural G(irls)20 Summit Steering Committee. She has also served as the Vice-Chair of the Board of Immigrant Women Services Ottawa. In March 2017, she was an NGO Delegate on the official Canadian Government Delegation to the 61st Session of the United Nations Commission on the Status of Women. Sally has previously worked at Refugee 613, the National Judicial Institute, Nobel Women’s Initiative and the Parliament of Canada.

MODERATOR:

Imane Alt Daoud is the Supportive Counsellor at Nisa Homes Edmonton, with a Masters in Psychological Sciences, and a background in clinical and experimental psychology. She works with women coming from all walks of life to educate them on mental health and to provide them with mental health support throughout their journeys at Nisa Homes. Her goal in her work is to empower women to rediscover their sense of self and personal identity so that they can lead independent lives.
