Refugee: 1 of 4

You came to Canada as a visitor and filed for refugee status after landing in Canada. You came here as a family with a child and your spouse. Your refugee application is in process for the past ~ 5 years and you are expected to make it through this period without a work permit and no social supports because of your refugee status.
There is marital discord in your relationship due to hardships and constant battle to survive. Your child has an illness that needs your constant care and attention. This responsibility is physically draining and does not leave you with much time for yourself. Your spouse abuses you verbally and blames you for all the trouble that you are facing as a family. One night, the abuse gets physical and neighbours call the police on your spouse.
The police remove you and your child from your home and puts you in an emergency shelter. The social worker at the shelter reaches out to Nisa Homes and refers you to us. You don’t have any choice but to go to Nisa Homes as you do not know what lies ahead and what your options are going forward. After coming to Nisa Homes, a needs assessment is done with you by your caseworker.
Caseworker reaches out to Legal Aid to support you with getting an immigration lawyer to help you with your case. Your lawyer discovers that the immigration has denied your application and the grace period to appeal your application has passed. Your spouse did not attend the hearing and hid this information from you and now you are stuck in this situation where you do not know what to do and whom to ask for help.
The lawyers asked for a fee to file this appeal. The caseworker and you worked through other options to see if there is a way to get this done for less money. You found a Student lawyer (Student at Osgoode School of Law) who is willing to file this application for free. You do not know what the right steps are here.

Nisa Homes works closely with many community organisations that provide families with support for children who may have some developmental delay. We will set up a meeting with them straight away on your behalf and see how else we can support you and your child.

Nisa Homes holds regular group workshops on different topics that teach important life skills to our residents during their stay. Life skill workshops include navigating social media, banking, transportation etc. Those workshops will be an excellent starting point for you to learn new skills to begin working on your new cooking business.

Nisa Homes can provide you with a safe, warm home and help you to make your own goals and find a solution so that you can have a place to call home.
