The day my two toddlers and I moved out of Nisa Homes they were devastated, screaming and sobbing. They kept saying they don’t want to leave their home and why am I doing this to them. They had already forgotten that just a couple of months before, they were also sobbing when we arrived to Nisa Homes. They wanted to go back home. So I hit the ground running so I could get them their own home as soon as possible, and because I was so blessed to have been able to come to Canada, I knew I couldn’t take advantage of this. Back in my home country, everything had been destroyed because of the war, even my own family when my husband was killed. I was an accomplished engineer back home and I had applied to a masters program here in Canada, I had even gotten a full scholarship alhamdulilah.
But with all the chaos and the problems we went through to get to Canada, I just couldn’t afford to not work. But with Nisa Homes’ support in getting me bursaries, subsidized childcare, and accessing resources, none of which I knew about, I was able to complete my first semester while at the home alhamdulilah. Then I got into student housing and Nisa Homes continued to be there for me until I graduated. Now, I am working as a manager at a multinational corporation alhamdulilah! And because I couldn’t have gotten here, to the point where I can now give back, without Nisa Homes, I do my part by donating the groceries they need every month.
And yes, my kids do still ask me about Nisa Homes!
