I came to Nisa Homes 2 years ago after suffering from extreme physical, sexual and emotional abuse at the hands of my husband and mother-in-law. Although I had made the decision to leave after I was hospitalized, I was so scared of them finding me. I was terrified of even leaving the home just in case they saw me and took me back to the dungeon in the basement they would lock me up in. I had multiple panic attacks while at the home whenever I needed to leave. I don’t know where I would be if the counsellor wasn’t there helping me just take one more step outside everyday.
The caseworkers also helped me figure out what I wanted to be and do, something I hadn’t thought about since getting married so young and going through everything I did for years, I thought that was all my life would be. I started volunteering and eventually applied to college for social service work. After seeing the change they made in my life, I knew I wanted to help change other women’s lives too. I got a full scholarship alhamdulilah and got a job at the agency I did my placement at right after graduating alhamdulilah!
