TRIGGER WARNING

“Outside our home, my husband was the image of perfection. Volunteering at the mosque, always helping his family, and an amazing friend and colleague.

At home, it was a different story.

He would constantly tell me I was worthless, nothing. I wasn’t good enough for him, I was stupid. I was educated and I had a good job, which I left only when I had my first child. I thought having a child would finally make me worthy in my husbands eyes, but unfortunately nothing changed. Slowly, I started believing him and fell into severe depression and went on anti-depressants. As my mental health deteriorated his anger towards me increased.

He also started controlling everything from my money, which he took every penny of, to where I went and who I spoke to. And because I was too ashamed, I slowly started losing touch with my friends and family. Months would go by where I wouldn’t even leave the house.

I even started contemplating killing myself.

One day, my husband told me he deserves to marry another woman because “look at me”, I wasn’t a wife. When I said no and started arguing, he punched me in the face. That was the breaking point for me.

I called Nisa Homes who helped me create a safety plan and go there a couple of days later. They provided phenomenal counselling that completely changed my view of myself and everything that happened to me. I was able to get a job again and Alhumdulillah myself and another sister at Nisa Homes found a place and now live together, support each other, and are the sisters we never had.”
