“I can clearly remember the heart-breaking call I received as I was getting ready to leave work one day.
Anna was a revert, who was abandoned by her husband, leaving her to fend for herself. She had no one to turn to for help. While her in-laws never accepted her because of her cultural differences , her own family had cut ties with her when she became Muslim.
Swayed by the constant pressure from his family, her husband left the country, leaving her with no means of support and a broken heart. She was desperate to find safe shelter for herself, her toddler, and her unborn child. Despite how vulnerable she was during this phase of her life, Anna had great faith that Allah would take care of her.
With the help from her local community, Anna learnt of Nisa Homes and called us immediately. Hearing this, we arranged for her and her child to take shelter at Nisa Homes, until she was able to provide for her family.
During her three months stay at Nisa Homes, our team did their best to support her needs until she was able to find housing and acquired temporary financial assistance while she wrapped up her education! With the overwhelming help of our community, we were able to furnish her place and get her the baby supplies she needed.
This woman’s experience and her journey towards a self-sufficient life is a constant source of reflection for me in terms of the importance of the work we do at Nisa Homes and the services we provide. Many women in our very own community are facing countless barriers to an independent life and it is our responsibility as one ummah to collectively support our women.”
